Whenever I need iron, I run the edge of Shimmering Flats and Thousand Needles. One run around the rim, and I usually have a full stack or more of iron, and you also rin into a lot of tin along the way. Plus, I find more spawns of gold, sometimes silver, and at least the Centaur cave in northern 1K needles, the wyvern cove in Southern 1K Needles, and the bug area in Southwest Shimmering Flats can be relied upon to have at least 1 mithril node. This Map is very handy.
